If you aren’t familiar with the Bowman brand then do some research and you’ll quickly learn that Bowman, now Rustler Yachts, is one of the highest quality yacht builders in the world.  The quality of construction and attention to detail that went into a Bowman yacht easily matches that of more well-known US builders such as Morris and Hinckley.  Suitable comps for the Bowman 36 would be the Morris Justine 36 or the Hinckley Pilot 35.

The Bowman 36 is representative of the highest standards of custom yacht construction and is certainly a “bluewater” yacht in every sense of the word.  The term “Bluewater” gets thrown around for just about anything that floats these days, but here she is, an ACTUAL blue water cruiser designed to cross oceans in safety and comfort. In fact, the Bowman 36 is one of the few boats approved for the Golden Globe Race for circumnavigation. Couple that with drop dead gorgeous lines in her classic build and tons of modern upgrades including an interior refit to make her more viable as a liveaboard, Cloud truly has it all. Every boat is a compromise, but she’s as close as you’ll find to the perfect balance in solid offshore performance yet still comfortable at anchor.

Built in 1974 to to Lloyd’s +100A1 standards, her bulletproof hull (solid fiberglass, no coring) is just about all that is original.

In late 2018 she was delivered to North Carolina from Bermuda. During that passage, she was hit by a strong Nor’easter off Cape Hatteras and when some running rigging failed the relatively novice crew called for assistance from the US Coast Guard which responded and took Cloud in tow. During the tow from the Coast Guard, Cloud took on water up to about a foot above her sole.

While this might give a prospective buyer some concern it is actually a blessing in disguise. From 2019-2022 she underwent an extensive refit, including the complete pickling and rebuild of the engine which was already put in brand new in 2008. The engine is still like-new and has less than 500 hours on it. The Sellers have put over $100,000 into bringing Cloud back to life with a modern touch in comfort and safety features.

An interior refit was performed by the legendary Bayliss Boatworks where an interior cabin housing 2 pilot berths was rebuilt into a comfortable dinette which also converts into a berth and massive storage cabinets. Padded paneling was added throughout the interior and the v- berth was also completely rebuilt to accommodate two people instead of one. All three deck hatches were replaced with brand new low-profile Lewmar hatches.

The following are all additions made between 2019 – 2022:

Sails and Rigging

2x mainsail. Our first mainsail order was about 1' too short on the foot, so it is now a spare with slightly less sail area than the main currently fitted. However we used the original mainsail on our crossing from Bermuda and didn't have any noticeable difference in performance | 135% Genoa | Harken ESP roller furler | Forespar telescoping whisker pole

All sails are Far East Sails. The spare main and the genoa were made in late 2018 and the main that's on the boat now was made in early 2019. All Barlow winches, 2x size 24 forward in cockpit and 2x size 18 aft in cockpit. Size 24 on port side of mast for main halyard, size 16 on starboard side of mast for jib halyard/whisker pole topping lift. Standing rigging was installed in 2012  however, the boat wasn't sailed AT ALL until December 2019, so although the rigging is 10 years old, it's only been under load for 3 years. The forestay, however, was replaced in 2020 with the new roller furler.
