WINE DOWN, Hull #87 of well over 100 Tartan 4100s, built from 1996 until 2011, is a spectacularly preserved VERY lightly used racer/cruiser you need to see in person to appreciate. Designed by Tim Jackett who spent nearly 50 years with Tartan Yachts,
this design series, including ten models from 31’ to 53’, represents some of the most sumptuous and performance-oriented yachts that came out of Tartan since they first debuted the now famous Tartan 27 all the way back in 1960.

YACHT HISTORY - (2) years use, (6) years storage:
WINE DOWN has been a Chesapeake Bay cruiser since purchased new. Both first and second owners have been middle-Chesapeake-based cruisers. Erin and I helped her current owners purchase WINE DOWN in 2018. Too soon after purchase, her owners came into a can’t-pass-up business opportunity in Italy at the end of 2020. Originally a two-year gig, they extended their overseas stay and never made it back to the USA to resume their cruising adventures. WINE DOWN was carefully tucked away in land storage in the fall of 2020. Two years became six years and they have reluctantly decided it’s silly and wasteful to keep such a gorgeous yacht sitting idle any longer. She has been diligently maintained and updated over the years, even while in land storage. You can now be the recipient of their meticulous care, and thoughtful updates.
Most updates have happened over just the last nine months or so. Recent work includes engine service, hull compound & wax, exterior teak stripping & sanding, new dodger & bimini, freshly painted rig, fresh bottom paint, new batteries, new stereo & cockpit speakers, sails (main and genoa) cleaned and serviced, and a full scrub-down inside and out. We just recently fully rigged and prepared the boat, launched her, and took her out for ‘wake up/shake-down’ sea trials in May, 2026. She is looking good and running great!

SAILS & RIGGING:
WINE DOWN has a performance rig, large fully-battened flaking mainsail and 135% genoa. She is nearly completely handled from the safety of the cockpit. Oversized primary winches make for easy handling of the genoa. The genoa furling system is set up for winch-assisted furling on the port side of the cockpit in bigger winds.
Her carbon fiber mast offers several major advantages over a traditional aluminum mast, particularly beneficial on performance cruising yachts like the Tartan 4100. The biggest advantage is weight savings aloft. Carbon fiber masts are dramatically lighter than aluminum, and because that weight is removed from the highest point of the yacht, the effect on performance and stability is significant. A lighter mast lowers the yacht’s center of gravity, reducing heel angle and making the boat feel more stable and balanced under sail. On WINE DOWN, her carbon rig is like adding five 200# crew to the toe rail while beating upwind! So much less weight aloft improves sailing performance and brings these benefits:

• More responsive feel at the helm
• Greater overall speed and efficiency
Another major advantage is stiffness. Carbon fiber masts flex less than aluminum, which allows the sail shape to remain more consistent and efficient across varying wind conditions. Better sail shape translates directly into improved upwind performance and easier sail control.
For cruising sailors, carbon rigs also improve comfort offshore. The boat heels less, moves more smoothly through waves, and places less strain on both crew and rigging over long passages.
On Tartans specifically, the lightweight carbon rig is a huge part of why these boats sail so well while remaining easy to handle short-handed. The reduction in rig weight gives the boat a noticeably more stable, lively, and refined feel underway.

Stepping below decks aboard the Tartan 4100 immediately reveals the quality and craftsmanship that made Tartan one of America’s premier yacht builders. Rich satin-finished American cherry joinery, abundant natural light, and elegant proportions create a warm, inviting atmosphere throughout the yacht.
Descending the companionway, the spacious main salon opens beautifully with comfortable seating to port and starboard surrounding a centerline dining table. Large opening ports and overhead hatches provide excellent ventilation and natural light, giving the interior an airy, refined feel uncommon in yachts of this size. Every top hatch and cabin-top port light opens allowing breeze through the yacht – no fixed windows!
To port, the U-shaped galley is exceptionally practical for both entertaining and offshore passage making, offering generous countertop space, deep 3-door access 12V refrigeration, and abundant storage. Opposite the galley, the forward-facing navigation station provides a secure and functional workspace underway and, at anchor, provides an additional seat for salon entertaining.
Forward, the owner’s stateroom features a spacious centerline berth, extensive cabinetry. Aft, the guest cabin offers a large double berth and excellent storage, creating comfortable accommodations for family or additional crew.

YANMAR ENGINE PERFORMANCE & REVIEW:
The Yanmar 4JH4E is an outstanding match for the Tartan 4100, delivering the ideal balance of power, efficiency, reliability, and simplicity for a performance cruising yacht. Rated at 56 horsepower, the naturally aspirated four-cylinder diesel pushes the 4100 comfortably at cruising speeds between 6.8 and 7.5 knots while remaining smooth, quiet, and fuel efficient.
One of the engine’s greatest strengths is its strong low-end torque, which gives the Tartan excellent maneuverability around docks and confident performance when motoring into chop, current, or heavy weather. At typical cruising RPMs, fuel consumption is modest—generally around one gallon per hour—providing impressive cruising range and economical operation for long-distance passage making.
The 4JH3E is also highly respected among experienced sailors for its mechanical simplicity and long-term durability. Unlike newer electronically controlled diesels, the fully mechanical Yanmar design is easier to service, troubleshoot, and maintain, making it particularly attractive for offshore cruising and owner maintenance.
In the Tartan 4100, the engine feels exceptionally well matched to the hull, providing dependable performance without excess noise or vibration. Overall, the 4JH3E perfectly complements the 4100’s personality as a refined, capable, and confidence-inspiring cruising yacht.

OUR REVIEW:
As the mid-Atlantic dealer for Tartan Yachts, Erin and I have accumulated several thousand inland, coastal, and off-shore miles on the Tartan 4100. She’s quick, comfortable, and gorgeous above and below decks. The 4100 is widely regarded as one of the finest performance cruising yachts of her era, combining spirited sailing characteristics with exceptional offshore comfort and craftsmanship. Designed by Tim Jackett, she delivers impressive speed, balance, and responsiveness while remaining forgiving and easy to handle for a cruising couple. Her rig layout and control lines allow for easy single-handed sailing as well. Her bow thruster, 3-blade feathering prop and oversized rudder make her a cinch to handle around the docks.
Under sail, WINE DOWN is super lively and confidence inspiring, especially in spirited seas. Her moderate displacement hull, efficient underbody, and powerful sail plan provide excellent upwind performance, whether in Chesapeake chop or offshore conditions where the boat tracks beautifully and maintains momentum through sizable gusts. The helm, with her 48” wheel and large spade rudder, provides a light and balanced feel as wind speeds build, giving the yacht a refined, responsive ride uncommon among cruising boats of this size. Her carbon rig lowers the center of gravity so much that she heels less, accelerates faster, and rides better through chop.
