Hallberg-Rassy has been building iconic racer-cruisers in Sweden since 1943, and the German Frers designed 42F MK II is one of the best. Versions of the 42 have been voted a Top-5 boat in sailing publications including as a top cruising boat for couples and, most recently, #4 in the “40 Best Sailboats” ever in Cruising World in 2019. The vessel was built under the supervision of Germanischer Lloyd and comes with the accompanying certificate.

The HR42 is what constitutes a dream yacht. It is a stout design that was originally tested in the tough conditions of the North Sea and has since proven itself all around the world. Not only built for strength and comfort, Happy Ending has distinguished herself in many races – most notably the 2,700nm ARC and the Harvest Moon Regatta (under her previous name, Asylum) where she regularly maintained speeds between 7-8kts.

Happy Ending has been very well maintained by her current owner, who is a professional captain himself. The previous owners spared no expense on her and as soon as you step aboard this center cockpit yacht, you’ll feel the security of the design and confidence with the overbuilt systems. Hull and Deck

The vessel is hand laid GRP and the hull is insulated with PVC foam above the waterline against the heat or cold. There is a complete grid system below the sole to further stiffen the hull. The original standing rigging is overbuilt and still in very good shape (inspected 2022).

Numerous hatches and dorade vents provide ample ventilation belowdecks. The dinghy is securely stored on 3/16” stainless davits. There is an on-demand freshwater washdown system both forward and aft.

Sails and Sail Control

“Happy Ending” is designed to make sailing easy and enjoyable for both skipper and crew, and the extensive sail inventory will allow you to get the most out of all conditions. Head and mainsails are roller furling, and adjustments can be made directly from the helm with no need to move forward in the cockpit to access the electric winch controls.

The lifelines have side gates on both sides for easy and safe access at the dock.

Cockpit

The secure center cockpit has beautiful teak and provides great visibility from the helm that is protected with bimini and dodger. All lines lead aft and, with the furling systems, the vessel can be singlehanded or crewed easily with 2.

At the helm station itself you feel at total control with a smooth helm and throttle, B&G Zeus 7” MFD, 3x race displays, autopilot controls, and VHF remote. With immediate proximity to the electric winch controls for the main and headsail sheets, the skipper can tack the boat with ease. There are 7 winches in total (4 electric), allowing you to always have a tool for the job without having to constantly swap lines on the drum.

Safety

In addition to the proven offshore track record of the HR 42s thanks to their excellent design and outstanding construction, the boat comes equipped with 2-way AIS which will allow you to see and be seen in all conditions.

If the need to call for assistance arises, you will have multiple options with the VHF and VHF wireless remote, Iridium Go, and EPIRB that is still in certification (with a second backup that is outside its certification date).

The engine compartment is easy to access from multiple sides and gives you ample space to complete any maintenance or repairs at the dock or at sea.

There is also a comprehensive offshore medical kit onboard.

General Belowdecks and Comfort

The living space belowdecks is expansive and features generous headroom, ample storage, and plenty of natural light and airflow thanks to the many hatches, ports, and windows. The natural light plays well with the luxurious mahogany woodwork and deep blue upholstery that was redone in *July 2023*, as well as the teak and holly cabin sole. During lowlight conditions, the boat is lit with efficient LED lighting with the option to use red lighting at the nav station. For ambiance and soft lighting, there are custom running floor and under-cabinet lights as well.

There are numerous 110 AC, USB, and 12v charging stations throughout.

The cabin is thoroughly cooled and heated by a 16k BTU system for the main salon and forward head/cabin, and a 12k BTU unit aft.

Nav Station

The comfortable Nav Station is the nerve center of the boat. In addition to the typical circuit breaker panel and electrical system monitoring, you have another Zeus MFD. The wiring behind the circuit breaker panel is well organized.

Galley

The large U-shaped galley provides plenty of working space as well as all of the amenities that you need to cook satisfying meals onboard. There is a deep double sink with the option to use a foot pump or electric pump directly from the water tank, and another electric faucet head for filtered drinking water

For keeping your food fresh and then cooking it, there are separate and very deep top-loading fridge and freezer, as well as a microwave and Force 10 2-burner LPG stove/oven (2x 5gal LPG tanks).

Plenty of storage rounds out this well thought out galley.

Main Salon

The main salon offers a large U-shaped settee to port and another bench-style to starboard – comfortable seating for 6. The table in the salon is oversized and in excellent shape. The excellent natural light really makes the rich mahogany and new upholstery pop.

There is a flatscreen TV with built-in DVD as well as HDMI input, and a stereo with associated speakers in the salon and cockpit.

Aft Cabin

The spacious aft cabin has a large near-queen sized berth as well as additional bench seating and direct access to the aft head. A hanging locker and multiple cabinets above and below provide plenty of clothing storage.

Forward Cabin

The well-appointed forward cabin has plenty of standing room and spacious sleeping for two and direct access to the forward head. With even more built in storage than the aft cabin, it makes the case that both cabins are worthy of being claimed as the “main cabin” based upon personal preferences.

Heads/Showers

The large aft head features an electric vaccuflush system and closed-off standup shower. The slightly smaller forward head is a wet head for showering purposes, and features a standard electric flush system.
