Interior

Six berths in 3 doubles. The Owner's Suite is forward and features an en-suite head and shower. The mattress is over 6ft 8 inches long, and is inner sprung, it also raises at the head of the bed using an electric ram. In addition to the huge amount of storage under the berth, there is a large hanging locker and vanity with mirror. This Owner's stateroom is very well appointed, comfortable, and practical for liveaboard sailors.

The two identically-sized aft cabins are generous in space and can comfortably sleep an adult couple in a well lit and ventilated cabin. The configuration of this Catalina 425 allows for accommodation to starboard, and its cabin is outfitted with an inner sprung mattress, under bunk storage, and an ample sized hanging locker. The cabin to port is setup as a utility cabin and is used for storage and systems access. Large hatches provide access to the engine room, the battery charger, hot water tank, steering, rear of the engine, gearbox and stern gland. This systems access is immensely practical and should be found on every good cruising boat. The utility (storage) cabin can be accessed by the large gullwing hatch on deck allowing access from the cockpit.

The Saloon has U-shaped seating to port where 8 people can dine around the highly varnished teak table. The table has folding leaves and the telescopic leg allows it to lower to form a huge bed. Opposite the dining area are two captain's chairs either side of the chart table. Under seat storage is found beneath the seats both to port and starboard and beautiful teak lockers run the length of the saloon on both sides.

The galley is both safe and functional- a must for any bluewater cruising boat. The storage is cavernous but arranged such that access is easy. There is a large fridge with freezer compartment and a separate freezer within easy reach of the chef. A microwave oven is situated above the stove and flanked by two deep dry stowage lockers. Next to the oven is a huge dry storage bin which is supplemented by under counter cutlery storage.

Rigging and Sail Handling

Oversized standing rigging with slightly swept back double spreaders terminate to inboard ball and socket chainplates. This minimizes maintenance, allows for wide and unobstructed weather decks, and best of all, allows for excellent sheeting angles even with large headsails. The genoa tracks are long and class leading, they run back to the oversized 55 sized primary winches at the helm.

Garhauer blocks, Selden headsail furler, Selden -in mast furler with ratchet mechanism for safe and controlled reefing.

Electric Lewmar 45 halyard (reefing) winch on the starboard coachroof.

Manual Lewmar 45 winch on port side coachroof.

A large Garhauer mainsheet traveller is adjustable from the cockpit as is the rigid boom vang.

The Mainsheet and Jib sheet are led back to the helm, so tacking and gybing can be done easily by one person while sat at the helm. The self tacking Jib, furling main and Code 0 make this an versatile, but simple boat to sail.

Steering

Twin destroyer wheels are mounted to offset Edson pedestals. This allows the helms-person to stretch their legs out forward (not always possible on every twin helm boat).

Chain and sprocket from pedestals are connected to via steering cables to the steering quadrant on a single "Deep Defence Rudder".

The Deep Defense Rudder is a Catalina design that protects the rudder stock in the event of a collision. The bottom third of the rudder will break away maintaining the integrity of the rudder stock and leaving two thirds of the rudder to get you home.

The rudder also features a major and minor mold. The two pieces of the rudder are not joined in the center of the leading edge which is prone to collision and cracking. This greatly increases the durability of the rudder.

Raymarine Autopilot connected directly to steering quadrant.

Emergency tiller.

Manufacturer Provided Description

The 425 incorporates all of Catalina’s hallmark features: a functional, spacious cockpit, a comfortable, carefully detailed interior, and all the 5 Series features that have redefined the Catalina brand.

The deck includes twin helms on performance pedestals with pre-stretched cables. The hull features six large fixed ports recessed into the hull for lots of light and visibility. A self-tacking jib and jib traveler are standard, and main and jib sheets are lead to the helm for efficient short-handed sailing. The forward owner’s cabin features a large centerline berth with an elevating adjustable mattress. There are starboard and port aft cabins; the latter is easily convertible to a storage cabin with a "gull wing cockpit hatch". A central accessible mechanical space provides excellent access to primary engine, generator, water heater and air conditioners, which simplifies maintenance and inspections necessary for systems reliability.

Unique design features include a watertight StrikeZone™ collision bulkhead forward; DeepDefense™ rudder system for failsafe steering and a T-Beam MastStep™ structure, with all the benefits of a deckstepped mast and the strength of a keel-stepped mast. The SecureSocket™ mast support/chainplate system facilitates perfect load resolution and watertight integrity. Knitted fabrics create a stronger laminate without additional weight. Catalina’s trademark lead keels absorb impact for safety and require less maintenance than other materials. All systems are designed following the recommendations and standards of the ABYC and IMCI to earn the highest rating of Category A - Unlimited Offshore.
